160. 5467267. GEORGE PETER ALEXANDER HEALY (AMERICAN, 1813-1894).

Description

half length portrait of "Anna (Nannie) T. Murphy Later Lady Wolseley Wife Of The 9th Bt", wearing a white dress with large cuffs, a cross shaped pendant, silver bangle and rings, holding a pencil in her right hand, oil on canvas, signed and dated in red 'G. P. A. Healy. 1876.' to upper left, 69 by 53cm, in a gilt gesso frame, 93 by 80cm, with a 'Bedel et Compagnie', number '27188', depository label to back of frame.
Notes: Lady Anna Theresa Wolseley, 1860-1937 Daughter of Daniel T Murphy and Anna (nee Geoghegan) of Murphy Grant and Co, San Francisco. American heiress, Anna or Nannie as she was known within her family was well travelled both before and during her marriage. Anna and Sir Charles Wolseley 9th Bt, married in 1883, a marriage to 'save the estate' during the American 'gilded age'. Daniel Murphy died suddenly before the full marriage settlement had been paid. Sadly, after bitter court cases between her siblings in America, a settlement of a lower sum was reached and Anna alone held the purse strings. Anna continued to travel and provided a small allowance to her husband, resulting in the decline of the estate.

Condition

Some losses to frame, painting no obvious damage or repair, would probably benefit from a clean.

November Curated & Collectable Sale

Batemans present their November Curated & Collectable Sale, offering art, jewellery, silver, ceramics and collectables.

Including an incredible collection of British portraiture from the 17th century onwards, led by a work by John Russell RA, alongside portraits from the circles of Sir Godfrey Kneller and Joseph Highmore and a follower of Sir Peter Lely. Further works include pieces by Edmond Brock, William Alan Menzies, Patrick Nasmyth, Frank Spenlove-Spenlove and George Peter Alexander Healy, as well as an interesting Japanese Kanō school painting.

Jewellery includes diamond, sapphire and gold rings, sovereign rings and mounted sovereigns, charm bracelets, a spectacular 19th century diamond and pearl brooch, and Georg Jensen silver jewellery. There are also wristwatches by Cartier, Omega and Baume & Mercier. Silver highlights include an incredible Victorian tankard inset with over 1000 years of British coins, a rare Edwardian mechanical pig bell, and George III fruit basket.

Several incredible objects d'art are offered, including a wonderful late 19th century Viennese silver-gilt and enamel table clock by Hermann Böhm - a thing of extremely high quality and beauty. Also a rare George III pocket globe in shagreen case, and a Chinese carved jade bowl looks set to attract serious competition when it goes under the hammer on 3rd November.

Ceramics and glass range from 18th century Chinese porcelain and an early 19th century Bloor Derby dessert service to a Troika ‘Wheelbase’ vase and a Lalique Ganymede champagne cooler. There is also a large collection of Royal Crown Derby paperweights, being the second part of one private collection we have handled.

The sale also features a signed copy of Houdini’s The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin, , a late 19th century violin and two violas, and bronze sculptures by Andrew Glasby. You’ll also find a 1970s De Sede buffalo leather sofa, oak country furniture, longcase clocks, militaria, dolls’ houses and classical CD box sets.
